Must Read for honest, detailed characterization, pitch prefect dialog, and setting that lives and breaths.
Rowing in Eden Barbara Rogan
Must Read for how a professional weaves plot, 3-D characters, internals, and dialog into a wonderful story.
Paladin of Souls Lois McMaster Bujold
Must Read for the 3-D characters who portray what heroic really means and a universe that is as multidimensional as the people in it. This is a fantasy and the sequel to The Curse of Chalion. Read Curse first.
Matters of Faith Kristy Kiernan
An good read that provides an intricate story that investigates faith from many angles during a life and death health crisis.
The Scarlet Thread Francine Rivers
Good story in an older style. A CBA classic.

Oo, I liked Searching for Caleb. I just read something good but you recommended it so nothing for your list. Since then I've been reading the Goose Girl series (YA) by Shannon Hale. I'm enjoying them.

ReplyDeleteI tried reading Francine Rivers' stories set in ancient Rome (while writing Austin's story) but found them kinda tedious and head-hoppy. Maybe her other ones are better?
I'm rereading the Twelve Books of Middle Earth at the moment. Love all of Tolkien's writing!
Also read a really funny book the other morning - Who Writes this Crap? by Joel Stickley and Luke Wright. Each page features a hilarious rewrite of the stuff we all read every day, from shampoo bottle labels to sensationalist newspaper articles to office emails - all organized according to time, so that you move through an entire 'day in the life'.
Anne Tyler's books are a bit of a slog for me. I finished SEARCHING FOR CALEB and wasn't impressed. I didn't like AN ACCIDENTAL TOURIST either. I don't think I will read any more of Tyler.
DeleteI _loved_ ROWING IN EDEN! That's a wonderful book. Francine Rivers can head hop, but I did enjoy THE SCARLET THREAD and REDEEMING LOVE, but you have to understand that she means to show her beliefs.
That's okay, I wasn't too bothered about that aspect of Rivers. But head hopping really bothers me.

I'm reading An Echo in the Bone. Something tells me you've already read that one though. ;-) Less than 200 pages left and then I'll start reading Les Miserables.

DeleteI've started rereading GONE WITH THE WIND after decades since my last read. The story holds up very well because of the 3D characters.
Do you sence a requirement for my favorite read? Characters are a must!
