Reading the Classics

~~How long has it been since you read the classic novels? When I got my Kindle, I realized that there are a lot of old classics available for free. I know, I know, you're going to say that that's what libraries are for. But my local library has a really strong air freshener and I'm allergic to it. I've returned many books after only a few pages because of it. I'm happy to use the Kindle for my catch up reading.

~~Here's a list of some I've read lately:
  • Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson (The first adult novel I read way back when I was 11.)
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas the elder
~~I have the following on my Kindle waiting for me to read them:
  • The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas the younger
  • Anna Kaenina by Leo Tolstoy
  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
  • Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
~~Do you have some classics you'd like to read? What are they? Or do you find the older, slower starts hard to get into?

  1. I recently downloaded the whole six book series that starts with The Three Musketeers. I've read the first one (The Three Musketeers) and the last one (The man in the Iron Mask) but not the others. They're in my virtual TBR pile

I've also had fun reading the Tarzan books.

  2. I've been contemplating reading Pride and Prejudice again.

LOVE the story, the mini-series, the movie! It's Jane Austin's written word that has me staring at it night after night, as it stares back, from my night stand!

I know I *want* to re-read the classics. My brain cells, or lack of, are screaming for something less... marshmallow. I, just this week, talked my husband into reading, Dickens' "Great Expectations" for the first time.

Now, if only I can hide myself away in a closet somewhere, uninterrupted, just me and Jane!

Thanks for the Classics reminder, Zan Marie! Happy Reading.

  3. @Sara,
I'll have to see if I want to continue with the enitre 6-book series after reading Three Musketeers. ; )

    @Scarlett,
You're welcome! I have trouble interesting my hubby in old stuff, even the Dune series that he loved when we were much younger. (g)

  5. I've downloaded all of George Elliot, Jane Austen, Shakespeare and Dumas father and son. Other public domain classics include Kipling, Willa Cather, L. Frank Baum and Louisa May Alcott. This has been one of the great delights of having a Kindle -- reading the classics all over again.

  6. Great idea Zan Marie! Are you reading or rereading?
I've read Little Women a few times, and started Jane Eyre a while ago but haven't finished it yet.
Haven't read any of the others! I'd better step on it.

  7. Lynne,
I think the option of free public domain works is one of the best arguments for ereaders, don't you?

    Deniz,
I'll admit to not reading all of these earlier, so I'm reading many of them for the first time. ; )

  9. Ms. Saba--Sounds like you have some reading to do. I haven't read or reread all of them yet and can't say if they're good reads. ; )
